A medication reference built from the interaction graph. It is not prescribing information — the label and your prescriber are.
What is uncertain
Read off the same rows as above. Nothing here is added that the entry does not itself record.
- Caution with Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia): Overlapping lipid mechanisms — coordinate.
- Caution with CBD (Cannabidiol): CBD inhibits CYP3A4 and can raise levels of many drugs, including some statins.
- Caution with Grapefruit: Grapefruit inhibits CYP3A4, raising levels of simvastatin/atorvastatin and the risk of muscle toxicity.
- Caution with St. John's Wort: Induction can lower levels of CYP3A4-metabolized statins, blunting their effect.
Interactions
Documented pairings with supplements and medicines. A medicine on this list is a conversation for whoever prescribes it.
Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia)Caution
Overlapping lipid mechanisms — coordinate.
CBD (Cannabidiol)Caution
CBD inhibits CYP3A4 and can raise levels of many drugs, including some statins.
GrapefruitCaution
Grapefruit inhibits CYP3A4, raising levels of simvastatin/atorvastatin and the risk of muscle toxicity.
St. John's WortCaution
Induction can lower levels of CYP3A4-metabolized statins, blunting their effect.
Coenzyme Q10Depletes a nutrient
Statins lower CoQ10 ~30–50%; repletion may ease muscle symptoms.
The evidence in words
What it is
The first-line LDL-cholesterol-lowering drugs, with strong outcome evidence.
How it works
They inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme of cholesterol synthesis — the same pathway that makes CoQ10, which is why they lower it.
What it's used for
Lowering LDL and cardiovascular-event risk.
Supplement & drug interactions
Statins has 5 documented interactions mapped below and in the interactions graph. Two supplement themes: statins deplete CoQ10 (repletion may ease muscle aches — modest evidence), and grapefruit raises levels of some statins (myopathy risk). Red yeast rice IS a statin — don't stack it.
Nutrient depletions
Drug-induced nutrient depletion is real and under-recognized: Statins can lower Coenzyme Q10. Statins lower CoQ10 ~30–50%; repletion may ease muscle symptoms.
The rule
This is a medication reference for spotting interactions, not dosing advice. Every change to a supplement stack around a prescription belongs with the person who prescribes it.
