The evidence in words
What it is
Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) is marketed for cognition, mood, and (topically) skin firming.
How it works
A putative acetylcholine precursor with antioxidant activity; the cholinergic route is debated.
What the evidence shows
Cognitive and mood evidence is weak and inconsistent; topical DMAE has modest short-term skin-firming data. Not a reliable nootropic. Some developmental-safety concerns argue against use in pregnancy.
Safety & interactions
Generally tolerated; avoid in pregnancy given developmental concerns.
Bottom line
Weak for cognition; the better evidence is topical/cosmetic. Skip it as a nootropic.
