The evidence in words
The verdict
For osteoarthritis, Boswellia earns evidence grade B (unclear effect, mixed consistency) — there is real evidence here. Reasonable RCT support
How it might work
Boswellic acids inhibit 5-lipoxygenase and leukotriene synthesis, a distinct anti-inflammatory pathway from NSAIDs.
How to use it
100–250 mg/day of a high-AKBA standardized extract (product-dependent).
Safety & cautions
Well tolerated; occasional GI upset.
Bottom line
One of the more convincing joint botanicals for osteoarthritis pain. Use a standardized high-AKBA extract and give it a couple of weeks.
How it is used
As the entry records it, from the studies it summarises. Not a recommendation for you — doses that suit a trial population may not suit you.
