The evidence in words

What it is

PHGG is a soluble, low-viscosity fiber (e.g. Sunfiber) made by breaking down guar gum, used for gut regularity and IBS.

How it works

It ferments to short-chain fatty acids feeding the microbiome, normalizes stool water content, and — unusually — helps both loose and hard stool.

What the evidence shows

Trials support PHGG for improving IBS symptoms (both constipation- and diarrhea-predominant), regularity, and as a prebiotic, with excellent tolerability and minimal gas versus inulin. It's low-FODMAP, making it IBS-friendly.

Safety & interactions

Very well tolerated — one of the gentlest fibers; introduce gradually. Psyllium Husk — Complementary soluble fibers; PHGG is gentler on gas.

Bottom line

A standout tolerable soluble fiber for IBS and regularity that works in both directions and causes little bloating. A great first fiber to try.
