What is known

Conditions

What is uncertain

Read off the same rows as above. Nothing here is added that the entry does not itself record.

  • Thin evidence: Mood / motivation (healthy) (grade D).
  • Studies disagree: Parkinson's motor symptoms (mixed agreement).
  • Caution with SSRIs / SNRIs: Serotonergic/MAOI combinations risk serious reactions.

Interactions

Documented pairings with supplements and medicines. A medicine on this list is a conversation for whoever prescribes it.

The evidence in words

What it is

Mucuna pruriens (velvet bean) is a natural source of L-dopa, the dopamine precursor, marketed for mood, libido, and 'motivation.'

How it works

Its L-dopa is converted to dopamine, the same mechanism as Parkinson's medication.

What the evidence shows

Standardized mucuna has genuine trial support in Parkinson's disease (comparable to pharmaceutical L-dopa in some studies). For healthy 'dopamine boosting,' evidence is thin and the risks (nausea, dyskinesia, interactions) mirror the drug. Fertility signals exist in men.

How to use it

Standardized L-dopa content; Parkinson's use only under neurology care.

Safety & interactions

Drug-like risks — nausea, blood-pressure and psychiatric effects; dangerous with MAOIs and additive with Parkinson's drugs; avoid casual use. ssri — Serotonergic/MAOI combinations risk serious reactions.

Bottom line

This is L-dopa. Real in Parkinson's under care; not a casual mood/motivation supplement given the drug-level risks.

How it is used

As the entry records it, from the studies it summarises. Not a recommendation for you — doses that suit a trial population may not suit you.

Standard
Standardized L-dopa; Parkinson's use under care.
