What is known
Each outcome with its grade (how strong the evidence is, A to D), the size of the effect where the entry records one, and how often studies agree.
- Post-meal walkingEvidence grade A
Blunts the post-prandial spike; 10–15 min is enough
Moderatehigh
- Resistance trainingEvidence grade A
Muscle is a glucose sink; sensitivity up for 24–48h
Moderatehigh
- Weight loss (5–7%)Evidence grade A
DPP: 58% lower progression to T2D
Largehigh
- BerberineEvidence grade B
Metformin-adjacent glucose lowering; GI tolerability varies
Moderatemixed
- Fibre (35g/day)Evidence grade B
Flattens the curve; viscous fibres most
Smallhigh
What is uncertain
Read off the same rows as above. Nothing here is added that the entry does not itself record.
- Studies disagree: Berberine (mixed agreement).
The evidence in words
What it is
Cells respond less to insulin, so the pancreas compensates with more, and fasting glucose and HbA1c drift up (5.7–6.4% is prediabetes). It's a spectrum and, crucially, often reversible when caught here.
What moves it
Post-meal movement, resistance training, weight loss, fibre, meal timing (front-loading calories) and sleep. Berberine and metformin sit behind lifestyle as pharmacological levers, not replacements for it.
The timing lever
Late, large, carb-heavy dinners produce the worst glucose excursions. Shifting the biggest meal earlier and walking ten minutes after it is disproportionately effective.
How it is used
As the entry records it, from the studies it summarises. Not a recommendation for you — doses that suit a trial population may not suit you.
- Movement
- A 10-min walk after the two largest meals; resistance training 2–3×/week.
- Timing
- Front-load calories; avoid large carb loads after 8pm.
- Monitoring
- HbA1c quarterly; a two-week CGM baseline is high-signal.
Questions people ask
Is prediabetes reversible?
Frequently, yes — the Diabetes Prevention Program showed lifestyle beat metformin for preventing progression.
Berberine or metformin?
A clinician call. Berberine is over-the-counter with a decent glucose signal but weaker evidence and GI side effects; metformin has the deeper trial base.
